For some, a spouse who asks for a divorce is no surprise at all. They’ve seen it coming for months. For others, it’s a complete shock, and they are not prepared in the least.

With any legal case, including divorce, it helps to prepare in advance. That’s why it’s beneficial to know what signs to look for to spot an upcoming divorce. This buys you time to get your paperwork together, consider what you want in the divorce agreement and find out what legal options you have. So, what are some of these red flags? They include the following:

  • You and your spouse are no longer able or willing to communicate.
  • You feel like you cannot voice your opinion without causing an argument.
  • Your spouse no longer respects you and shows you in various ways, such as refusing to call you by name or belittling you in front of friends.
  • You start noticing more and more annoying habits that you may not have worried about at the beginning of the relationship.
  • Your spouse tells you about their expectations for the marriage and you realize that they never matched your own. You feel like you’re never going to be happy living that way.
  • After the honeymoon, your spouse changes significantly and in ways that you don’t approve of.
  • You both stop doing the simple things that show that you care about each other, such as saying thank you or giving compliments.

Naturally, every marriage is different, so these red flags don’t always apply. If you do notice them, though, it may be time to look into your rights during a divorce.
