Why cellphone addiction causes car accidents

If you’re ever waiting at the crosswalk at an intersection, take a moment to look at the drivers who are passing through that intersection. It can be slightly concerning to see how many of them are looking down at their phones. This is clearly a major distraction and could cause an accident.

But why can’t drivers stop doing it? If it’s so obvious that distracted driving is dangerous, couldn’t they just turn their phone off and put it in their pocket? They could always just turn it back on when they get to their destination and check their notifications at that point.

Habits and anxiety

Part of the issue here is just that cellphone addiction can lead to an extreme sense of anxiety for someone who is used to being on their phone all the time. They’ll be constantly wondering about what notifications may have come in or what they have missed. They feel this compulsion to check those notifications that can override their judgment. This is why someone will look down at their phone to check their text messages even when they’re driving.

It also can be something of a habitual behavior. Just because the cellphone chimes or buzzes in someone’s pocket doesn’t mean they have to immediately check the text message. But so many people are used to doing this that they don’t even think twice. They just pull their phone out instinctively and look at it, even when they should be looking at the road.

Cellphones aren’t going anywhere, so this type of distraction will always exist. If you’ve been injured by a driver who caused an accident, you need to know how to seek financial compensation.
